Fairgoers win prizes for culinary treats

HOULTON, Maine — Houlton Agricultural Fair officials reported another exciting Fourth of July weekend at the exhibit hall. The hall was filled with 52 entries of photography, artwork, quilts, handmade items and even three Lego creations, and the cooking contests drew great participation.

Prizes were awarded to the following winners.

Crockpot Challenge Cooking Contest: Sarah Harrison was the grand prize winner with 360 points, Karla Harrison came in second place with 349 points, and Jeff Bouchard earned third place with 343 points. They made dishes that included breakfast casserole, lava cake, a spicy chili and barbecue baked beans.

Crockpot Challenge Appetizer Contest: first place, Sarah Harrison; second place, Karla Harrison; third place, Brooklyn Brown.

Crockpot Main Course Contest: first place, Sarah Harrison; second place, Becky MacIlroy; third place, Jeff Bouchard.

Crockpot Dessert Contest: first place, Jeff Bouchard; second place, Sarah Harrison; third place, Karla Harrison.

Crockpot Best Recipe Contest: first place, Jeff Bouchard; second place, Karla Harrison; third place, Sarah Harrison.

Kids’ Cookie Contest, ages 12 and under: first place, Lydia Byron; second place, Jaida Jackman; third place, Gabriel Jackman.

Kids’ Cupcake Contest, ages 12 and under: There were 14 entries and winners were, first place, Michelin Eckstein; second place, Lydia Byron; third place, Natalie MacIlroy.

Kid’s Cupcake/Cake Contest, ages 13-17: first place, Kiley Eckstein; second place, Chloe Eckstein; third place, Brooklyn Brown.

Houlton Farms Dairy Baking Contest: first place, Karla Harrison; second place, Lydia Byron; third place, Kassy Jackman.

Salsa Contest: first place, Kassy Jackman; second place, Karla Harrison; third place, Angelina Jackman.

New England Baked Bean Contest: first place, Janice Lebel; second place, Gary Farnham; third place, Becky MacIlroy.

State of Maine Blueberry Pie Contest: first place, Karla Harrison; second place, Angelina Jackman; third place, Gary Farnham.

State of Maine Apple Pie Contest: first place, Karla Harrison; second place, Angelina Jackman; third place, Sarah Harrison. Harrison and Jackman will have the opportunity to represent the Houlton Agricultural Fair this fall in the State of Maine Apple/Blueberry Pie Championship, which will be held in Bangor during Octoberfest.

Guacamole Contest: first place, Stephanie Christian, who was visiting from Texas; second place, Angelina Jackman; third place, Charles Jackman.

Spam Contest: first place, Karla Harrison with her spam breakfast pizza; second place, Kassy Jackman with Spam mac-and-cheese; third place, Angelina Jackman.

Best Watermelon Recipe Contest: first place, Sarah Harrison with her watermelon pie; second place, Angie Wotton with watermelon, olive and feta salad; third place, Angelina Jackman with watermelon sherbet.
