Pictorial postmark celebrates Festival

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine The United States Postal Service in Fort Fairfield, in cooperation with the Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, will join in celebrating the 69th annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival with a keepsake picture postmark — also known as a pictorial cancellation in collectors’ circles — to be offered at the Fort Fairfield Post Office.

The Post Office will have a table set up on the front lawn on Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Postmaster Roger Plante said the picture postmark is free. “We will apply the postmark on any envelope that has proper postage, making it a first class souvenir of the day,” the postmaster said. The image depicts a barrel of potatoes and was provided at the request of the Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s a postmark that is more than an image,” added Roger. “It is a picture that tells a story of our roots in Aroostook County.”
Those who miss the day of the event, but wish to obtain the postmark, may submit a mail order request. Pictorial postmarks are available only with the dates indicated, and requests must be postmarked no later than 14 days following the pictorial postmark date.
Customers wishing to obtain a postmark should affix first-class postage to any envelope or postcard, address the envelope or postcard and tuck in the flap. Place the envelope or postcard in a larger envelope and address it to Postmaster, Fort Fairfield Post Office, 289 Main St., Fort Fairfield 04742.
After applying the pictorial postmark, the Postal Service will returns the items (with or without addresses) under addressed protective cover.
