100 Years Ago – July 12, 1916
Batter up! — Leland McElwee, Houlton’s crack baseball player, who just graduated from Bowdoin College, has signed up with Connie Mack to play with the Philadelphia American League Team, and on his first appearance with the team made the following record: 5 times at bat, 1 score, a 2-base hit which sent in a score, 3 putouts, 1 assist and 1 error.
75 Years Ago – July 10, 1941
Accepts position — Miss Ruth Kirlin of Houlton, who was graduated from the Bangor Maine School of Commerce, has accepted a position as commercial teacher in Fort Fairfield High School. She will begin her duties in the fall. Miss Kirlin is the daughter of John L. Kirlin.
Fast blossom — Several friends and neighbors of Mrs. Parker C. Newbegin met at her home Wednesday evening to watch a rare event – the opening of the buds of a night blooming cereus. The three buds on this particular plant began to open about seven o’clock, and by 10 o’clock they were fully blossomed. With daybreak the flowers began to fade.
50 Years Ago – July 13 , 1966
Grand opening — The grand opening of the new Norge Laundry and Cleaning Center on North Street will be held this weekend. The new Norge Village is owned by Roland and Marge Fernekes, and joins Sears Catalog Order Store and the C&G supermarket in the shopping center.
Dedication — Upwards of 600 tree farmers and guests are expected to be on hand at Houlton Saturday to witness twin ceremonies which will mark an impressive step forward by Maine’s private forest industries.The dedication of a 167,000-tract of the state’s timberland to the American Tree Farm System and a related ceremony a few hours later of a modern wood chip producing plant here by Standard Packaging Corp. will climax a week set aside by Gov. John H. Reed honoring Maine’s Tree Farms.
25 Years Ago – July 10, 1991
New addition — The Monticello Fire Department, organized in 1974 with 28 men on the roster, received a 1991 GMC tanker-pumper on May 28 that carries 1,800 gallons of water. The unit cost $70,000. The department raised money by holding bingo games and public suppers, which brought in $57,000, and Monticello added $13,000.
Chairman’s choice — The McGill’s Community Band float was chosen the best depiction of the “Celebration of Patriotism” theme by the parade association during the Fourth of July Parade.
