100 Years Ago — July 27, 1916

Work progressing — Work on P.J. Powers’ new theatre building is progressing rapidly. It will be 45 by 96 feet, with a seating capacity of nearly 800; there will also be a large stage with dressing rooms. When completed, it will be one of the handsomest buildings in town.

75 Years Ago — July 24, 1941

Fast food service — A new curb service restaurant to be opened under the name of Ed’s Grill and Open Door, formerly Brittain’s Restaurant, Sweden Street, is now being remodeled and expected to be ready for service in the early part of next month. The proprietor, Ed Knowles, is having the front torn out, to be replaced with glass doors, new chromium grill, fluorescent lighting and other modern features.

50 Years Ago —July 27, 1966

National Guard camp — This Friday nearly 70 vehicles including trucks, jeeps and sedans, carrying over 350 Maine Army National Guardsmen, will be traveling from Aroostook County on their way to Camp Drum in New York. The men will leave from Fort Kent, Fort Fairfield, Caribou, Presque Isle and Houlton for two weeks of annual field training.

Clash — A presumably rabid fox and a family dog clashed on the Woodland Road Tuesday morning. The woman reported that she had let her children outside to play shortly before the seemingly crazed animal passed between them. As the woman tried to swat the fox with a flywacker, the family dog, Toby, jumped the fox and wild animal retaliated with a bite on the nose. The family notified the Game Warden Maynard Pelletier and a search for the fox, took place.

25 Years Ago — July 24, 1991

Company expands — Officials at Northern Plastics Engineering Inc. announced plans Friday for expansion and upgrade of their manufacturing plant on the Access Highway in Caribou. Harris L. MacNeill, owner and president of Northern Plastics, said the 3,200-square foot expansion will provide additional job opportunities for professional, technical and skilled workers in the coming year.
