102 Years Ago – July 16, 1914
O.E.S. Field day picnic — About 200 attended the Order of the Eastern Star picnic at the Aroostook Valley Railroad park, considerable delegations coming from Ashland, Washburn, Caribou and Fort Fairfield. Mrs. M.K. Gerow was chairman of the Committee of Arrangements, being ably assisted by Mrs. J.C. Seeley, Mrs. Wellington and others. A most bountiful dinner was served.
Partnership — Mr. Frank Dudley, who had been in charge of the American Express Company’s office for some time, had resigned his position as manager and gone into partnership with W.M. Tompkins, who ran the garage and machine shop on North Main Street.
75 Years Ago – July 17, 1941
Sewall re-appoints commissioner — Fish and Game Commissioner, George J. Stobie, incumbent since 1929, has been reappointed by Governor Sumner Sewall for his fifth consecutive three-year term. Stobie, widely known as an authority on fish and game commercialization and propagation, first was known to the post by Governor William Tudor Gardiner and subsequently was reappointed by Governor Louis J. Brann and Lewis O. Barrows.
Central Aroostook towns adopting Food Stamp Plan — Ashland, Blaine, Bridgewater, Mars Hill, Portage, Westfield and Woodland, have adopted the Food Stamp Plan since the first of the month. Towns near Presque Isle that expect to start issuing stamps between now and August 1, are Castle Hill, Masardis, Mapleton and Oxbow.
50 Years Ago – July 21, 1966
Woman solos to England — Miss Marion Hart, a 75-year-old woman who had been flying since 1946 and bears a resemblance to Auntie Mame, left Presque Isle Airport in a single-engine “Bonanza” for stopover in Keflavic, Iceland. This was her first solo flight across the Atlantic to Europe. Two years prior, she made essentially the same trip but was accompanied. She learned to fly when she was working as a missionary in the northwest United States and needed to fly in order to get from one place to another.
U.M. opens local branch — The Continuing Education Division of the University of Maine announced a new center in Presque Isle at West Hall, Aroostook State College, directed by Mr. John R. Benoit. The university’s program of continuing education was created in July 1963.
25 Years Ago – July 17, 1991
PI Fish and Game awards $100 scholarship — The Presque Isle Fish and Game Club, in an effort to support education/awareness of conservation/sportsman issues, recently voted to present a $100 scholarship to each scout troop in Presque Isle. these scholarships are to be administered by the respective troops to sponsor one scout from each to summer camp.
Presque Isle stops Ashland, 8-2 — Presque Isle upped their record to 8-2-1 with an 8-2 win at Ashland in Aroostook County Summer Soccer League action. Presque Isle held a 3-0 advantage at the half as Dick Gardiner opened the scoring 20 minutes into the game with an assist from Joe Condon. Dan Winkleman then knocked in a loose ball in front of the net for a 2-1 edge. Don Kirkbride capped off the first half scoring with a blast from 12 yards out, unassisted.
