Houlton Town Meeting with Gov. LePage

To the editor:

I would like to address the way Governor LePage conducted himself and the June 15 “town hall meeting” in Houlton.

I thought it was going to be a two-way meeting with the governor presenting what he was planning to do if he got re-elected, and then we (the public) would have a chance to ask questions of him. Instead, he stated what he wanted and just let a few questions be asked, then he did not go into detail in his answers.

Now I understand that he is a busy man but … How can he expect us (the public) to vote for him if he does not even respect us enough to let us ask the questions that we deem important to us and answer them.

The way he conducted the meeting was mostly one-sided and I felt like this was just a sham on his part. He could not wait to leave the meeting. He wanted to be heard but did not want to hear us.

What was the purpose of Gov. LePage having this meeting if not to find out what the people wanted or needed from our government? How can he do a good job if he does not know what is needed?

I do not consider myself a vindictive or mean person, but I felt like I had to let the public know how I was feeling. This was in my mind a very unsatisfactory meeting. I did not feel like our concerns were important enough to be heard.

I was personally hurt and upset because what I needed to say and the governor’s answers I needed to hear were left up in the air. Again we (the public) were not heard. Why? He said our government needed to be accountable, where is his accountability when it comes to not hearing what the public has to say?

Our government is supposed to be for the people, by the people. Where did this go? What happened to the people?
