NEW DURHAM – Doreen Tomilson Bernier, 90, died on June 7, 2016, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NH, surrounded by family.
Doreen was married to “Uncle Gus” Bernier for 61 years, before his death in 2005. She was the loving mother of four children: Michele Bernier of Chapala, Mexico, Steven and wife, Elaine Bernier of Sunapee, NH, Brett and wife, Denise Bernier of Silverdale, WA, and Kathryn and husband, Carlton Woods of New Durham, NH. She also leaves a sister, Patricia, and husband, Carl Crawford of Houlton; as well as five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Doreen was born in Houlton to Angus and Beatrice Boulter Tomilson. As a young woman, she was a member of the local Civil Air Patrol and hostess at the USO where she met her husband. Gus and Doreen raised their children in Bedford, NH, and in retirement lived in Florida and Hawaii. Doreen had many interests. She owned her own business for several years, was an avid golfer and obtained her private pilot’s license at age 55.
In 2005, Doreen returned to New Hampshire to live near her daughter in New Durham where she volunteered at Huggins Hospital and the New Durham school system. She was a very active member of the Wolfeboro Senior Club serving as President for several years and also the Wolfeboro Senior Center and Meals. Her friends and family will miss her greatly.
She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, John and Earl; and sister, Elizabeth.
