Fort landfill gets watershed grant

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Tri-Community Recycling and Sanitary Landfill in Fort Fairfield will receive a $94,700 grant to restore a former wetland at its property.

The TCL, located on Murphy Road and administered by the communities of Ft. Fairfield, Limestone and Caribou, is receiving the grant from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection as part of the state’s Clean Water and Wetland bond program, approved by voters in 2014.

The landfill, serving more than a dozen municipalities throughout Aroostook County, plans to restore a former wetland complex next to a borrow pit, the DEP said in a media release.

The landfill also plans to create an open-water habitat for migratory birds and a transitional floodplain buffer to capture sediment and contaminants from stormwater runoff.

The finished wetland and buffer complex will be open to schools, bird clubs and other groups for nature observation and education outings.
