100 Years Ago – July 26, 1916
Solo act — The leading solos in “The Doctor’s Private Secretary” will be sung by Houlton’s best and most popular soloists, Misses Eva Hackett, Mildred Weiler and Winona Leighton, and Messrs. Harry Grant and Geo. Newell, assisted by 50 young ladies and gentlemen in chorus.
Meeting — The second meeting of the Aroostook County Retail Merchants Association was held in Houlton on July 18 in Perk’s Hall, and was attended by a large delegation from Presque Isle, who came by auto, bringing with them the Presque Isle Concert Band.
75 Years Ago – July 24, 1941
Aluminum drive — Something over 100 pounds of aluminum has been donated by patriotic housewives of Houlton thus far in the drive for old aluminum to be used for defense purposes. Several ladies brought old pots, pans, tea kettles and other household implements to the old armory building on the first three days of this week.
Golden celebration — In Mars Hill an open house was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Tapley in the honor of their golden wedding anniversary. They were married July 15, 1891 in Fredericton, N.B. They have resided for the past 41 years in Mars Hill.
50 Years Ago – July 27 , 1966
Ready for camp — Members of the Battery B in Houlton stood by their 105 howitzers during a special training session at the National Guard Armory prior to their annual trip to Camp Drum, N. Y. Battery B and other National Guard units in Aroostook will leave this Friday for their annual 17-day training period at Camp Drum.
Class reunion — The Houlton High School Class of 1926 held their 40th reunion at the Northland Houlton Saturday. There were 31 present at this first reunion of the class and many were accompanied by their husbands and wives. A few prizes were passed out, one to Elizabeth McKinnon of Tucson, Ariz., for traveling the longest distance, and one to Mr. and Mrs. Lambert for having the largest number of children or grandchildren.
25 Years Ago – July 24, 1991
50th — Reynold and Geneva Howe Plourde celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 20 with an open house given by their children at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Houlton. The couple married in Houlton July 17, 1941, and have resided for the past 42 years in New Limerick.
Studies away — Jeffery Brockway leaves July 30 for a year of study in Munich, Germany. Brockway is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brockway of Houlton. He is a 1989 graduate of Houlton High School and is entering his third year of electrical engineering at Worcester, Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass. He will be doing his third year under an exchange student program in Munich at the Fachhochschule School for Applied Technology.
