Correspondent blessed
Enjoyed covering tri-communities
To the editor:
When I started as the correspondent for Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill for the second time eight years ago, I did not have any expectations as to how long I would write for The Star-Herald.
There was a need and this opportunity was simply an enjoyable way for me to communicate the happenings of our tri-community on a weekly basis.
Over the course of my second term as correspondent, my Girl Scout Troop has grown from shy kindergarteners to confident, young teens; dozens of community pageants have inspired young girls to grow in self-esteem and self-confidence; hundreds of students have walked through the halls of Mapleton Elementary School and our five churches have served hundreds of community members through services and benefit fundraisers. The Mapleton Lions Club has opened their hall, provided financial support to local residents and supported our annual festivals for the past eight years.
I am confident that as I leave the responsibility of correspondent to someone else, our tri-community will remain the strong, supportive, tight-knit community that it is right now as I type this final column. As I walk away from this post, I am not going far. My family will still be proud members of this community that I have called home my entire life. You will still see my family and I at local events and fundraisers (especially auctions!). I am proud to say that my Girl Scout Troop will still be an active part of this community and we are happy to welcome and support the newest generation of Girl Scouts to our town!
I encourage you all to support my successor, just as you supported me. Submit news and photos often. Support your local newspaper! We are truly fortunate to have a small-town weekly newspaper to help us all stay informed and in touch with what is going on around us.
Helen Keller once said, “A bend in the road is not the end of the road … unless you fail to make the turn.” This is not the end of the road for me – I plan to make the turn as I embark on the path towards furthering my education.
My sincerest thanks to all of you who have provided me with news over the past eight years. I consider all of you part of my extended family.
