HOULTON, Maine — A homemade knife, resembling something that prison officials would refer to as a “shank” was discovered at Riverfront Park Friday, July 22, 2016.
According to Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna, a roughly six-inch piece of sharpened metal, with string wrapped around the base to form a handle, was discovered in the park by a resident and reported to police shortly after 10:40 a.m.
Captain Dan Pelletier responded to the park and found the make-shift weapon lying next to one of the tables in the picnic area of the park, just a short distance from the playground. The knife was taken to the police station and placed into an evidence locker as found property.
While it is not illegal for a person to create such a weapon, Chief McKenna said it was unusual to find such an item.
“It’s unusual for sure,” the chief said. “It is not typically something we would find lying around here.”
