HOULTON, Maine — With the playoffs looming, teams in the Houlton Ultimate Summer League are busy jockeying for position. The final regular season games were played Tuesday, July 26, 2016 and the postseason tournament will be held Sunday, July 31. The tournament starts at 4 p.m. at Houlton Community Park on the baseball field outfield.
The tournament features the No. 1 seed versus the No. 4 seed at 4 p.m., and the No. 2 seed versus No. 3 at 5:30 p.m. The championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. under the lights. All are welcome to come and watch.
Current league standings as of Monday were: 1, County Physical Therapy, 4-1; 2, WHOU, 3-2; 3, McDonald’s, 2-3; and 4, F.A. Peabody Company, 1-4.
Last week in HUSL action saw some phenomenal plays by all the teams as they tried to better their postseason ranks. In the first game, WHOU Yellow vs. FA Peabody Red Hand, WHOU paced the scoring through both halves. A well-organized offense and suffocating defense from WHOU made for a tough matchup for FA Peabody, who notched just one point in the first half.
WHOU took a 6-1 lead at the break, FA Peabody looked great to start the second half and scored the first two points. After a few adjustments by WHOU, the attack was stifled and WHOU ran away with the 11-3 victory.
In the second game, County Physical Therapy Purple Rain versus McDonald’s Blues, was another classic battle. The blue squad representing McDonald’s knows how to go the distance in games, as evidenced in last week’s 11-10 victory over FA Peabody. CPT started off the scoring quickly going up 2-0 and eventually 5-1. They surrendered the next two points to McD’s, but would win the half 6-3. Communication became key for McD’s as the team clawed its way back into the second half converting on several forced turnovers. But the relentless CPT offense was moving the disc well enough to stay in front. CPT secured an 11-8 win to help strengthen its claim on the first place seeding for the playoffs.
In games played the previous week, CPT defeated WHOU 10-7 in a hard-fought match, while McDonald’s edged FA Peabody 11-10 in overtime.
