Editor’s Note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Memorial Library in Houlton highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by the staff.

“This Is My Dollhouse” by Giselle Potter brings so many memories of imaginations we nursed in our childhood – before all the plastics came pouring into our children’s lives. This delightful story has the homemade cardboard dollhouse with a make-do family who uses bowls for swimming pools and finds a tiger with a broken leg needing first aid.

The best part of this book is the awareness of the narrator of the limits perfect toys bring with them. So she invites a friend who she is certain will hate her homemade toy – only to find an afternoon of pure fun with her friend’s delight in the imaginative play. Simple colorful pictures with great facial expression are fun to decipher. (jFIC Poy P)

Also we are quite impressed with a tiny and powerful book comprised of 20 poems called “Maine In Four Seasons”. Edited by Wesley McNair and illustrations by Jan Owen, both Maine admirers, this is a treasure. Poems bring vivid pictures of peepers in spring, fishing and dragonflies of summer, a young white pine of fall and, of course, Henry W. Longfellow’s “Snow-Flakes”.

This is a great book for those who do not want to expend too much time reading or trying to decipher the poet’s intent – won’t steam up your reading glasses at all but gently remind you of the treasures our state offers throughout the calendar year. (811 McN Me Coll)
