Eating all the profits
REMEMBER WHEN
We here in Aroostook County just came through the “strawberry season.”
I remember way back when I was in my early years, there would be a few days during berry season when we would get up in the morning and my mom, aunt and grandmother, along with us kids, would head into some remote but local fields to pick wild strawberries. We would pack and take a lunch and seemingly all the kettles and buckets in the house.
We kids may have picked a few berries but more than likely we would eat more than we picked. I will say this, mom, and gram and auntie would pick quart after quart of berries and when we got home we would have a biscuit strawberry shortcake for desert after dinner and then came the canning. All winter we would have strawberry jelly and jam and preserves with our meals.
Mass production and rural development has made it so that the wild berries are almost a thing of the past now. It sure is nice though, to remember when …
