Tennis team captures 34th consecutive title

CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Aroostook County doubles tennis tournament Thursday at the Teague Park tennis courts for area youths between the ages of 8-18.

There were over 20 participants from Caribou and Presque Isle. Players competed in 12 and under, 13-15, and 16-18 male/female age brackets by playing the best two of three sets in all matches.

Teams earned two points for every first-place finish and one point for a runner-up in the County singles tourney (held at UMPI July 19, 2016) and doubles tournaments.

Caribou took the lead after singles play with 11 points while Presque Isle grabbed second place with one point. At the end of the County doubles tournament, Caribou added 16 more points and ended with a final point total of 27. Presque Isle added another point and finished in second place with a total of two points.

This marked the 34th consecutive year that Caribou has taken home the team title after the annual youth recreation department tennis tournaments.

In the 12-and-under girls’ division, Madelynn Deprey and Daryl Freeman from Caribou took home the title as they defeated Sierra Galipeau and Maddie Jackson from Presque Isle, 6-0, 6-2.

The 12-and-under boys’ bracket had two entries from Caribou vying for the championship. Sawyer Deprey and Luke Beidelman cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over teammates Cory and Nick Freeman.

In the 13-15 girls’ division, two teams from Caribou reached the finals. Madison Stratton and Hailey Holmquist of Caribou outlasted teammates Sage Dubay and Scout Spencer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The 13-15 boys’ bracket had only one team entered as Brevin Barnes and Parker Deprey of Caribou won by default.

Two teams from Caribou were entered in the 16-18 girls’ division. Gabrielle Marquis and Ashley Matlock played an outstanding match on their way to a victory over good friends and fellow varsity team members Conner Spencer and Samantha Tourk, 6-0, 6-0.

In the 16-18 boys’ bracket, the best match up of the day pitted entries from Caribou against each other in a high-quality competition. Alec Cyr and Bailey Griffeth slugged it out against teammates Gabriel Rand and Seth Beidelman. The first set went to Cyr and Griffeth in a tie-break, 7-6 (10-8). The duo cruised in the second set, 6-0, to pick up the win.

Other players from Presque Isle were Hanna Boucher and Sara Blake.
