Cole acquires Great Works drilling firm

BANGOR — S.W. Cole Explorations, LLC (S.W.COLEx) has acquired the equipment and materials of Great Works Test Boring Inc. In the deal, the drilling company obtained three drill rigs and associated equipment, bringing the number of rigs owned by S.W.COLEx to five.

The exploration company is a subsidiary of S.W. Cole Engineering, which has a local office in Caribou. Other locations are Bangor, Augusta and Gray, as well as Manchester and Somersworth, N.H., and White River Junction and Williston, Vt.

The acquisition is key to the continued success of S.W.COLEx, explained general manager Kevin Hanscom. “New England currently has a very high demand for drilling services,” said Hanscom, “and this acquisition will allow us to grow our business and further meet the demands of the region.”

Dave and Cheryl Dionne, owners of Great Works Test Boring, Inc., are pleased about the agreement and feel their customers are in good hands. “Great Works and S.W.COLEx’s parent company, S.W. Cole Engineering Inc., have worked together for nearly 30 years, and they have always been trustworthy and reliable,” said David Dionne.

In conjunction with the acquisition, S.W.COLEx has hired former Great Works driller Jeff Lee, an experienced driller who has worked with S.W. Cole Engineering, Inc. as a subconsultant on hundreds of projects.

With the acquisition of Great Works’ three rigs, S.W.COLEx has significantly increased its availability to perform exploratory drilling across New England and is actively looking for experienced drillers and drillers’ helpers.

S.W. Cole Engineering Inc., the parent company for S. W. Cole Explorations, LLC, is a 37-year-old geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and geoenvironmental services firm.
