100 Years Ago – Aug. 9, 1916
Visit to play — Percy N. Hall, a former resident of Houlton, was in town last week playing with the Battle Cry of Peace orchestra.
Road standards — Hon. John Clark Scates and family were in town Sunday by auto on their way to the northern part of the county. Mr. Scates is a member of Gov. Curtis’ council and Secretary of the Maine Automobile Association, and says the roads in Aroostook County compare favorably with other parts of the state.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1941
‘Old Timers” — The ‘Old Timers’ of Mars Hill have had their ‘innings’. Almon O. Nutter, H.O. Hussey, S.L. Snow and George E. Pitcher planned a good time for the men in town who have passed their 70th birthday. There were invited to get together in Pitcher’s Hall, Aug. 6, where a free dinner was served with an enjoyable program. It was found that 52 were eligible to attend this party.
Move for work — Miss Greta Shields left the past week for Washington, D.C., where she will be employed in the War Department.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 10 , 1966
Honored — The daughter of Mrs. Eva MacPherson, Mrs. Tressa Lenentine and Mrs. Ida McKinnon, and her son, Clarence MacPherson and his family, assisted by some of her grandchildren, honored her with a birthday party on her 80th birthday last Monday evening at the Full Gospel Assembly. Mrs. MacPherson is quite well and active.
Naval aviator — Ensign Stephen M. Salisbury, USN, of Houlton, is designated a Naval aviator by Capt. G.L. Bliss, commanding officer of HT-8, after completion of helicopter flight training at HT-8 Ellyson in Pensacola, Fla.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 7, 1991
Celebration — Maynard and Edwina Hosford were honored at a surprise 50th wedding anniversary party July 28 hosted by their children at the Stover residence on Spaulding Lake in Oakfield. The cake was cut by Tonia Hosford and served by Comfort Crandall and Shawna Hosford. Music was provided by Terry Levesque.
50th anniversary — James L. Kimery, commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, has announced the award of a golden anniversary citation to VFW Post 2744, Houlton. The post will be 50 years old on Aug. 10.
