102 Years Ago – August 6, 1914

Millinery parlors — Mrs. E.P. Wilkins opened millinery parlors in the Greenlaw Block, formerly the Corey Restaurant; one of the best equipped stores of the kind in North Aroostook, and engaged one of the leading trimmers direct from New York City.

Name change — The machine shop known as Tompkins’ Garage changed its name to Tompkins & Dudley, who took over Mr. D.E. McGuire’s famous Grey line of threshing machines, wood saws, and gasoline engines, combined with the Little Giant repairs.

75 Years Ago – August 7, 1941

Auxiliary head installed — Mrs. Jerry Glidden became president of the American Legion Auxiliary at the annual installation of officers at the home of Mrs. Paul Beaulier. Other officers installed were first vice president, Mrs. Harold E. Brown; second vice president, Mrs. Wesley Clark; secretary, Mrs. Claude Turner; treasurer, Mrs. M. H. Friedman; historian, Mrs. Earlon Clark; chaplain, Mrs. George Black; past president, Mrs. Guy Hussey, Jr.; sergeant of arms, Mrs. Allen Kelly. Mrs. Hilda Hatch of Pittsfield, Dept. president, presided.

Potato house — Mark Turner built a potato house at Mapleton on a lot purchased from the B&A Railroad.

50 Years Ago – August 11, 1966

Twenty-years celebration — In celebration of 20 years in the mobile home business, Fox Trailer Sales had a gigantic six days open house for the residents of Aroostook and New Brunswick. Door prizes, free soft drinks, coffee and donuts were given; in addition to slashed prices on every trailer on their huge lot.

Insurance men party at Mantle — Employees of the Union Mutual Life Insurance Agency were treated to an annual summer party at Mantle Lake Park. Host was Myron S. McIntire, general agent of the Presque Isle agency. Twenty-seven employees and representatives, accompanied by their wives, came from Houlton, Fort Kent, Van Buren, Limestone, Presque Isle and across the border from Woodstock, Grand Falls and Clair, N.B.

25 Years Ago – August 6, 1991

Local artist honored — Artist Wilma Tompkins of Presque Isle received special recognition for her work at the Intown Arts Fest in Waterville. Over 80 artists from Maine and New England participated in this year’s show. Tompkins’ work was selected to receive a $300 purchase prize award sponsored by Dr. Michael and Dr. Meg Griffin of Waterville.

All-American team — Jennifer Shaw and Janice Wiggins, both of Mars Hill and members of the CAHS varsity cheerleading squad, were named to the 1991 All-American Team by the National Cheerleaders Association. The cheering competition was held at cheering camp in Hodgdon. Both girls, coached by Kathy Maynard of Presque Isle, went to Ireland to perform. The CAHS cheering squad had been state cheering champions for three years and received state runner-up honors during the current year under the direction of Maynard.
