ASHLAND — Robert W. Sawyer IV, 81, passed away August 4, 2016 at his Ashland residence.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, December 3, 1934, the son of the late Robert W. and Anita (Jacobson) Sawyer III. He graduated from Scarsdale High School, class of 1954, he then went to the University of North Carolina and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Campbell University in 1962. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bob was employed in retail in Sanford, N.C, prior to becoming an instructor at Central Carolina Technical Institute.
In 1970, Bob moved to Ashland to work for Dunn Timberlands, becoming president of the company in 1987. Bob enjoyed being an active participant in Ashland affairs as well as other area organizations. He was a past member of the Ashland Town Council, moderator of town meetings, served on the Ashland School Board and was a board member of the Ashland Logging Museum. Mr. Sawyer was also a member and past president of the Aroostook Fish and Game Club, Director for Atlantic Salmon for Northern Maine, Director of the Northern Maine Regional Planning Commission, Director of North Maine Woods as well as serving as a trustee of the Northern Maine Fairs Assoc. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America over the years, serving as Cub Master, Scout Master and on several North Star District committees. Bob was a member of the Presque Isle Community Players, performing in several of the club’s presentations. A 33rd Degree member and Past Worshipful Master of Pioneer Lodge #72 A.F. & A.M. , Bob held several offices within the Grand Lodge of Maine. He was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine, Charter member and past Captain and Sec./Treas. Of Sauu Nessu, Past President of the Aroostook Shrine Club, Honorary member of the Anah Klowns, aide to the Potentate; Past Masters Unit and the Maine Grand Lodge Ambassadors.
He is survived by his wife, Karen (Campbell) Sawyer of Ashland, his son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. Sawyer V and wife Amanda Barker of Ashland, grandchildren, Chance and Darius, a brother, Gerry Sawyer of Hudson, OH, his mother-in-law, Della Gilman, two brothers-in-law, Scott Campbell and Steven Gilman, a sister-in-law Denise Campbell all of Ashland, and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral and masonic services will be held at the Ashland Congregational Church, Friday, August 19, 2016 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mary Lou Brown, officiating. Following the service, all are invited to a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the Ashland Masonic Lodge. Interment will be following the service and fellowship in the Sawyer Family Cemetery, Ashland.
