102 Years Ago – Aug. 13, 1914

Announcement — The A.C. Perry Insurance Agency made announcement through circular letter to the public that the business of the firm will be continued under the management of Mr. Nathan F. Perry, who had been active in it for some years, in association with his father, the late Mr. A.C. Perry, and who had a very thorough training in the special department of the fire insurance.

New pastor — Rev. J.B. Ranger of Springvale was elected the new pastor of the Free Baptist Church.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1941

Williams chalks up another win — In another preliminary bout, Gilbert Williams, Presque Isle heavyweight, won his second pro start with a three round knockout of Al Roberts of Bangor in the Queen City this week. Roberts was down four times, twice in the second and twice in the third. On the last trip, he tried to arise but fell out of the ring. Williams weighed 192 against Roberts’ 208 pounds.

Lions 100 percent for Fish and Game Club — The Presque Isle Lions Club is completely sold on the construction of the new clubhouse for the Aroostook Valley Fish and Game Club. Members of the local service club subscribed 100 percent in the current drive.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 11, 1966

For heart emergencies — The Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital purchased a pacemaker defibrillator, a machine that hospital officials said “will greatly expedite care of patients admitted to the hospital with heart disease.” The equipment consists of a monitor with remote alarms, pacemaker and defibrillator.

Thompson retires — Officer Donald E. Thompson, 62, became the first member of the Presque Isle Police Department ever to retire from the force. Also owner and chief cook of Hall Street Diner, Officer Thompson had been on the force for 19 years.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1991

Named top schools — PIHS’s recent selection as one of the top 12 schools in Maine Educational Assessment performance had SAD 1 officials pleased about the results but cautious about proper application of the testing. As a result of their being cited for consistently scoring “beyond expectation” on the MEAs, the 12 secondary schools were being studied further by department officials in an attempt to discover how the schools had achieved these results and share that information with other schools around the state.

Star City earns safety recognition — Presque Isle was among several Maine communities awarded a special citation from the American Automobile Association for pedestrian safety. The Star City was honored for achieving six years without a pedestrian fatality, as part of the AAA’s 52nd annual Pedestrian Protection Program.
