A call to veteran Jewett Williams to come home

To the editor:

Will Hodgdon’s Civil War vet, Jewett Williams, finally come home to be with his mother and father, grandparents, neighbors and relatives, after many years and a long journey?

Waiting for this long-missing 20th Maine veteran are his father, Jared Chipman Williams, and his mother, Rosaline Jackins Williams, the daughter of Jesse Dulton a Revolutionary War veteran. Next to Jared’s grave are Jewett’s paternal grandparents, William Williams and Mary, he a Loyalist who came from St. John to Houlton, and built his cabin at the top of Drake’s Hill. That’s where Williams captured a British soldier from Woodstock and marched him back to the border, with Williams’ gun against his back.

Jewett’s maternal grandparents lie not far from the Williams lot. Samuel Jackins and Abigail Dulton, the daughter of a Revolutionary war veteran. Samuel was a War of 1812 veteran and a militia man during the Aroostook-Canadian trouble.

Also hoping to find Jewett home among them are the many Civil War vets from Hodgdon – 96 left, 17 of them died (see the Hodgdon Monument). We, also – all of us here – would like to welcome Jewett home at last, home in Hodgdon, not far from his mother and father. After a great military reception south at Togus, he then can begin the final leg of his long journey home.
