Winslow sisters keep 4-H goat show tradition
MAPLETON NEWS
For eight consecutive years, Stephanie and Amanda Winslow of Chapman have cared for and shown their goats at the Northern Maine Fair 4-H goat show.
This year Stephanie was awarded first place and Grand Champion for the care and presentation of her goat.
Amanda received the second place and the Reserve Champion awards.
In addition to showing her goat, Amanda participated in the 4-H Baby Beef program for the first time. She is looking forward to participating again in the baby beef program this coming year. Having graduated from Presque Isle High School this spring, Stephanie will be leaving the farm this fall to attend the University of Maine at Orono.
With the support and encouragement of their parents, Willie and Nancy Winslow and the Aroostook County 4-H program, these young women have proven to be excellent, faithful representatives of the 4-H program.

DOT contributes sign
Mike Pelletier, tri-community road commissioner, received the good news that the Maine Department of Transportation has awarded Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill an electronic speed limit sensor sign.
Over the past years, the boards of selectmen have become concerned about the rising speed of vehicles traveling through the three towns. Based on this concern, Pelletier was encouraged to apply for the speed sensor sign, which has been successfully obtained.
Pelletier said, “The sign has a solar panel to charge its battery, and a computer to set the speed and measure the speed of approaching vehicles.”
The sign will be portable and used in all three towns. A portable mount will need to be built before it can be put into operation. It will begin appearing in the last two weeks of September.
The goal, as Pelletier explained, is “to slow down the traffic that is traveling so fast.” Slowing speeds will increase safety for other drivers and pedestrians. The sign will flash when drivers exceed the posted speed, and experience shows drivers will quickly slow down when their speed is externally monitored, he said.
The State Police and Aroostook County Sheriff Department will continue to enforce speed limits, and the sign will only be used to let drivers know how fast they are driving.
Soccer Registration
This Friday, August 19, is the deadline for submitting registrations for the Mapleton Recreation Fall Youth Soccer Program. The registration sheet with fee must be turned in at the Town Office before closing time.
This year there will be three age groups: PreK-K, Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-6. The program will run from Sept. 6-Oct. 20. Program days and possible game times are posted on the Mapleton Recreation Services page on the town website. Team schedules will be published after the first week of practice.
