The co-ed softball league consisted of nine teams from Aroostook County and games were played in Presque Isle, Caribou and New Sweden throughout the summer.
The season wrapped up with a double elimination tournament. In the semi-final game played Aug. 11, MMG came from behind to knock off National Guard and earn a berth in the finals.
MMG had won the regular-season matchup to snap the Swedes’ 56-game winning streak which went back four years.
In the championship contest, MMG started out the game and led 5-3 after four innings. However, the Swedes’ defense was inpenetrable the rest of the way as the shut down the MMG offense. Offensively, the Swedes came back by scoring a run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth to take the lead. Following an MMG leadoff single in the top of the seventh, the Swedes set them down in order to claim the victory by a score of 6-5.
Regular season standings were as follows: first place, Swedes; second, MMG; third, National Guard, fourth, DFAS; fifth, Sitel; sixth, King Trucking; seventh, Pineland Farms; eighth, Aroostook Band of MicMacs; and ninth, Loring Job Corps.
