Ashland Scouts aid northern neighbors

FORT KENT, Maine It may have taken 13 bags of charcoal, but volunteers with the Fort Kent Lions Club were able to roast 800 chickens for the annual Boy Scout fundraiser on Thursday, August 11, 2016.

Starting two hours early, the Lions barbecued the chickens and Scouts from Ashland’s Troop 179 joined Fort Kent’s Troop 189 to prepare meals for pick up. Along with chicken, each $10 meal came with a baked potato, corn, drink and a desert.
Troop 189 Leader Lee Theriault said the Scouts from Ashland were a big help this year. “Without them, I don’t know what we’d do,” Theriault said.
The Ashland Scouts had joined those from Fort Kent for a summer camp event this year, as well.
With 800 tickets sold, many in advance, the drive-through lines were several cars deep, and divided into three lanes.
Theriault is not sure when the traditional chicken barbecue fundraiser started, but it has been going on for all of the 34 years he has been involved in Fort Kent Scouting.
