The 28th annual Rene Cloukey Charity Challenge Golf Tournament was held at the Limestone Country Club on July 23 and 24, 2016 at Long Lake Country Club. The tournament featured four nine-hole scrambles that included 220 golfers. Through the years, Cloukey has directed the tournament with much success and support by area businesses and participants.
All funds raised over the past 28 years has gone to Special Olympics of Aroostook. This year, a donation was made in the amount of $3,900. Organizers reported that this was one of the more successful contribution years and the popularity of the event reaches beyond Aroostook County.
Cloukey was presented with a legislative sentiment sponsored by Rep. Lester Ordway of Standish and co-sponsored by local representatives Bob Saucier, A.J. Edgecomb and Sen. Michael Willette.
Aroostook County’s Special Olympics program was established over 20 years ago with oversight by Central Aroostook Association and eventually grew to requiring its own organizing committee. State agencies, municipalities and school districts provide valuable resources and strong volunteer involvement.
Certified activities include track and field, aquatics, basketball, and soccer.
The “Snow Dogs” basketball team has notably achieved state championship titles and continues to be a leader and competitive rival at state competitions.
