HOULTON — At the Aug. 22 Houlton Rotary meeting members were once again trained on the upcoming very popular Rotary Auction.

Nancy Ketch handed out the solicitation cards to members and briefly advised members on how to ask for donations. The auction will be held on Nov. 19-21.

Rotarian Frank Thompson presented a short slideshow about Houlton’s Soap Box Derby. Houlton has one of the only dedicated derby hills in the country and is compared well to Akron, Ohio where the derby finals take place.

Thompson is searching for folks who have derby cars that have been built and then properly stored. He would like to have them dedicated to assist children in need to be able to participate in the event. There are stock cars and super stock cars. Super stock cars are a bit larger and more stylized.

Houlton Rotary continues to give funds to help the derby continue and built a storage shed at the top of the hill to store equipment. This year a Maine racer won the overall competition in Ohio. Drivers build their own cars by exact specifications. There is a dedicated volunteer crew that manages this event in Houlton. Anyone interested in helping out or donating to the cause can contact Frank Thompson or anyone involved in the organization.
