This year the Cary Library children’s summer reading program was “On your Mark, Get Set, READ!” The teen summer reading program was “Exercise your mind: Read!”
Both were very popular programs, with 123 children and 17 teens signing up. The Wednesday weekly activities included science fun with Sara McQuarrie, a popcorn challenge, Fit, Fur, Fun with Danielle Ireland and Maine Books for Kids.
For the 2016 summer reading program, the library continued the practice of providing a nutritional snack to each child for reading a book. As each child reached their halfway goal, they received a Pizza Hut certificate. Everyone reaching their goal received a certificate of completion, another Pizza Hut certificate, a McDonald’s coupon for a fry, and each participant chose a book for their personal collection at the final party.
“All of our readers did an outstanding job reading,” said Linda Faucher, library director. “Three thousand, one hundred and seventeen books were read during the five-week summer program. The commitment by these readers and the support of their families is to be commended and we applaud them.”
Cary Library expressed thanks to the many sponsors who helped make this program successful. Chris Carmichael from Pizza Hut continued to provide for the program with his donation of Personal Pan Pizza coupons, and Heidi Abbotoni from McDonald’s donated french fry cards for all the children.
Special thanks go to Paula Dahlk for providing another creative pinata and to Tracy Rockwell from the Houlton Higher Education Center for the book and plush fish combo prize giveaways.
“The library would also like to recognize and thank all the staff and the many volunteers that helped make this summer’s reading program a huge success,” Faucher said.
