A little while ago we were asked to help with a baby squirrel. This tiny little creature was only about 2 weeks old.
Though we know nothing about squirrels we stepped up to the plate to help this tiny little one get to where he needed to go. We went online and did a little research on what to feed and how much to feed and a few other things. It was determined that it was a little boy and he was all feet.
I have never seen such big feet on such a tiny creature. He looked like he had kangaroo feet so we named him Roo.
We knew that it was too late in the year and that given his age and size he would never be able to be released back to the wild in time for winter. Phone calls were made and a wildlife rehabilitator agreed to drive to Houlton and pick him up and take him back to her place where he will be released back to the wild in the spring.
Roo was such a curious little guy and he would scream very loudly when he was hungry. It was amazing to watch him. We are so glad that we got to be a part of his rescue.
Things continue to move forward at the sanctuary. We have hit a few more bumps
in the road but that just makes us more determined to cross the finish line. The mudding came in $900 over budget which we did not expect.
Juliette, the little kitten that we took in with severe injuries, is doing well, but her vet bills are now over $1000. Because of the unexpected we cannot set a grand opening date, but we can tell you that we will be in the new building sometime this year.
We are going to come up with a few more fundraisers to help offset our unexpected expenses. We are currently doing a fundraiser called with love from Juliette. We are selling cakes for $20. We have chocolate candy bar cakes and coconut creme cakes. All proceeds will go towards Juliette’s vet bills.
If you would like to order a cake call Lorraine at 532-7387. We need at least 24 hours advance notice.
We are looking for a few items to complete the sanctuary we need a very large industrial stainless steel sink for our utility room as well as two exterior French doors. Please contact Lorraine 532-7387 if you have either of these items and would like to help.
Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
