Owl squads get ready for season

Several UMPI sports teams will begin their fall season with contests this weekend.
The women’s soccer team competes in the Husson Classic in Bangor Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s opponent is Western New England of Springfield, Mass. at 4 p.m. and Sunday the Owls take on Husson at 1 p.m. The following weekend, UMPI hosts Maine Maritime Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m. and Thomas College Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. Trevor Parent returns as the Owls’ coach.
The men’s team, coached by Alan Gordon, is also on the road, meeting up against Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vt. Saturday at 3 p.m. They will then play at UM-Farmington Sunday at 3 p.m. The Owls’ first home game is next Wednesday, Sept. 7 against UM-Fort Kent at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex.
In volleyball action, UMPI plays UM-Machias Friday at 4 p.m. and on Saturday takes on Husson at 9 a.m., UM-Fort Kent at 1 p.m. and Unity College at 3 p.m. as part of the third annual Husson Invitational. On Sunday, the Owls travel to Gorham to play USM at 11 a.m. and Castleton State at 1 p.m. Jonathon Bowman makes his debut as coach of the Owls.
The cross country season begins Sept. 10 with the Husson Invitational in Bangor. The golf team plays its first match Sept. 14 at Waterville Country Club against UM-Farmington. Chris Smith coaches the Owl XC teams and Jon Humphrey is the new coach of the golf team.
