The Caribou soccer teams made it look easy Friday when they began regular season play.
The Vikings trampled over the Madawaska Owls in both boys’ and girls action played at Caribou High School. The boys gained a 7-0 victory behind three goals and two assists by senior Andre Rossignol and three goals off the foot of freshman Parker Deprey, while the girls prevailed by an 8-1 margin thanks to Searra Herbert’s four goals and two more by Maddie Doucette.
Alex Hyde tallied the other goal for the Viking boys and Cullin Caverhill dished out a pair of assists, while Carter Moir and Cole Jackson added one each. Noah Hixon and Cameron Doody combined for the shutout in goal.
“This was a good opener for a young and inexperienced team,” said Caribou head coach Scott Hunter. “We were able to finish in the box, which was something we’ve lacked the past couple seasons, and we were pleased with the chemistry and leadership shown by the veterans.”
In the girls’ game, Ashley Matlock had a goal and an assist, Gabrielle Marquis netted a goal and Alexis Rodriguez contributed two assists. Kerrigan Manter and Jaelynn Doody shared goalkeeping chores and combined for seven saves while facing 10 shots. Jenna Dugal scored the goal for Madawaska.
“We dropped both games to them last year, so it was a good start,” said Viking coach Todd Albert. “I don’t think we started well, but then began connecting more passes as the game went along.”
The LCS/MSSM teams played a doubleheader in Van Buren Monday to kick off their season. Lily Tedford scored twice, while Madelyn Emerson and Megan Tucker notched one goal each as the Eagle girls handled the Crusaders, 5-0. In the boys’ match, Tobyn Blatt and Alex Sprague were the goal scorers and Padraig Hardy picked up an assist as LCS/MSSM won, 2-1.
The Washburn boys are now 1-4-1 after they absorbed shutout losses to both Central Aroostook last Tuesday (1-0) and Fort Fairfield Thursday (4-0). The Tigers boys also bested Fort Kent last Tuesday, 2-1, on a Chris Gill goal in overtime (2-1) and added a 5-0 shutout victory over Ashland Friday to up their record to 5-0.
The Beaver girls were blanked by Central Aroostook last Tuesday, 9-0, but the team did bounce back to defeat Fort Fairfield in overtime Thursday, 4-3. Freshman Skylar Mette scored her fourth goal of the game with just 42 seconds left in overtime to even Washburn’s record at 3-3. Fort Fairfield is now 1-4. In addition to the loss to Washburn, last week the team suffered a 10-1 loss at Fort Kent last Tuesday and a 6-0 home loss to Ashland Saturday.
