XC squads kick off season
The Washburn and Presque Isle cross country teams began their competition season last week with meets in Fort Kent and Hermon, respectively.
Devon Maynard was the second-place finisher in the boys’ meet held at Fort Kent that included several Class C schools. Maynard finished in 20 minutes and 34 seconds to lead the Beavers. Brennan Viola and Konner Jordan were 12th and 13th, respectively, in the overall standings. Washburn had 64 points to finish behind LCS/MSSM of Limestone and Fort Kent and ahead of Greater Houlton Christian Academy. James Cyr of the Eagles was the meet winner in 19:58.
In the girls’ meet, Washburn’s Kassie Farley was fourth overall in 26:19 and Maggie Castonguay sixth in 27:40. Sam White was the Beavers’ only other competitor, so they did not have enough runners to figure in the team results. LCS/MSSM came in first, followed by Fort Kent and GHCA. Teagan Ewings of GHCA posted the winning time of 24:17.
Presque Isle took part in an exhibition meet at Hermon Saturday. Madison Jandreau of the Wildcats came in fourth place in 18:39.11 and Isabelle Jackson was 12th in 19:55.27 to lead the way. PI was fourth out of four teams with 85 points.
The Presque Isle boys were led by Trace Cyr, who was 10th overall in 16:20.62. Brandon McKnight was the only other Wildcat runner in the top 20. PI scored 85 points and as a team came in fourth.
The host Hawks, Ellsworth and Caribou were the other teams participating.
