Amelia “Mickey” Kelley visits a Boston Red Sox game in person

CARIBOU — Amelia “Mickey” Kelley, who currently resides at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou, never misses a Red Sox game on television, and had always dreamed of seeing a game in person.

After receiving a nomination from Veterans Home Activity Director Karen Page, the Maine Health Care Association turned Kelley’s dream into a reality through their Live Your Dreams program.

“I’ve been fan all my life. My Dad, brothers, and husband were all fans, so it was a natural thing,” said Kelley before adding that she looks forward to going again soon.

According to Page, when the MVH staff found out Kelley had won a trip to the game, they brought everyone together in the multipurpose room and all told her at once.

“She was quite shocked when we told her,” said Page. “She kept saying ‘Why me?’”

Staff began to realize that a car ride may be a bit too long, so they reached out to PenAir, who donated two tickets while MEVETS donated the third.

Kelley attended the game on August 31st with her nephew Michael Lajoie and R.N. Shirley Grant.

“As long as they won, it was a good game,” said Kelley. “If they didn’t, I was thinking I’d have to find a baseball bat and get out there on the field. I’d be hired right off.”

Kelley says there are a lot of good players on the team, but her favorite is rightfielder Mookie Betts.

Last week marked her first trip to a Red Sox game and to the city of Boston, which Kelley said was “all right, but I wouldn’t want to live there.”

“It was all really wonderful,” Kelley said. “Everything was taken care of and we just had a good time.”
