Safety Team members at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou celebrate their Safety and Health Award for Public Employers win in front of the home on the Van Buren Road in Caribou. The award is given to employers with an exemplary safety culture.

The local veterans’ facility is located on the campus of Cary Medical Center, and provides long-term care, rehabilitative services, memory care and residential care for Maine veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents.

“Safety of our residents and our staff is a priority at Maine Veteran Homes in Caribou, and this award validates these efforts.” said Melissa Graham, MVH-Caribou administrator. “The safety committee has been instrumental in making a safe work environment part of our culture.

“I am very proud of the entire team at MVH,” Graham said.

The SHAPE award was conceived in 2005 as a way to recognize public-sector employers and employees who are striving to provide a safe and healthful workplace. It is given only to exemplary public-sector employers after a thorough review and inspection of the employer’s safety and health policies and procedures by a SafetyWorks! consultant.

The total number of SHAPE certified worksites in Maine is only 65.
