The fall soccer season is now in full swing for local high schools. The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Sept. 3, 2016.
Bangor Christian 10, Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville Friday, the Cougars were shut out for the second time on the season. Scoring for Bangor Christian were Tyler Welch (three goals, one assist), Luke Chandler (two goals) and Joshua Palmer, Erik Gorczok, J Dean Grass, Micah Martin and Tyler Lehman, each with one goal.
Katahdin goalies Tanner Lane and Bradley Hotham combined to make 22 saves on 49 shots, East Grand 2, Shead 0 — At Eastport, the East Grand Vikings earned the season-opening shutout over the Shead Tigers. The Vikings took a 2-0 lead into halftime with goals from Noah Sixberry (34:33) and Wyatt Oliver (1:43, penalty kick).
East Grand keeper Thomas Gilman had six saves on 10 shots while keepers C.J. Francis and Isaac Curtis combined to make three saves on five shots for Shead.
Van Buren 1, Hodgdon 5 — At Hodgdon Aug. 31, in the season opener for Hodgdon, Dylan Oliver scored two goals to propel the Hawks past Van Buren. The Crusaders opened the scoring 28 seconds into the game with a goal by Matthew Burgess. Hodgdon (1-0) battled back to take a 2-1 lead with goals by Oliver and Jordyn Merritt.
The Hawks got three more goals from Oliver, Merritt and Daden Palmer. Wyatt Foster assisted on Oliver’s second goal.
Hodgdon’s Josh Foster made 16 saves on 20 shots while Van Buren’s Michael Ayotte made five saves on 12 shots.
Katahdin 0, Southern Aroostook 5 — At Dyer Brook Tuesday, Aug. 30, Jackson Mathers recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals, including two unassisted, as the Warriors rolled by the Cougars.
Tyler Batchelder and Brett Williams each added a solo goal for the Warriors, while Gavin Vining contributed two assists and Mathers had one. Nolan Altvater made two saves on three shots.
Tanner Lane finished with 16 saves on 41 shots for the Cougars.
