HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton golf team split matches to open the season last week, beating Presque Isle and Caribou on Aug. 31, but falling to Mattanawcook Academy Aug. 30, 2016.
At the par-36 Houlton Country Club on Aug. 31, Houlton golfers tallied a 182 to beat Presque Isle (185) and Caribou (208). Shire Drew Marino was medalist on the day with a 37.
Individual results for Houlton (2-2) golfers were: Marino 37; Wyatt Harvey, 45; Nick Brewer, 49; Isaac Vega, 51; Devin Ivey, 53; and Carson Grant, 57.
Individual results for Presque Isle (3-3) were: Hunter Flynn, 45; John Saucier, 46; Seth Roy, 47; Libby Boone, 47; and Isaac Madore, 53.
For Caribou (3-3), Bailey Griffith, 62; Connor Plourde, 51; Gabe Rand, 52; Stewart Curtis, 53; and Noah Rosado, 52.
At JATO Golf Club in Lincoln Aug. 30, the Shires had a tough matchup and struggled in the season opener. Mattanawcook Academy won the meet with a low score of 152, followed by Presque Isle, 191; and Houlton, 193.
Individual results for Mattanawcook were: Logan Thompson, 37; Connor McLaughlin, 37; Max Woodman, 39; and Jeff Garfield, 39. For Presque Isle, Flynn, 37; Saucier, 50; Roy, 53; and Boone, 51.
For Houlton, Harvey had the low score for the Shires with a 38, followed by Marino, 43; Brewer, 50; Vega, 62; and Ivey, 70.
“It was a combination of nerves and playing our first match of the year against the Class C State Champions (Mattanawcook),” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “We now know what it is going to take to be competitive in Class C. Wyatt Harvey put a very nice round together and was medalist for Houlton. It was a first for Wyatt.”
