Young readers enjoy end-of-summer event
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The United Way of Aroostook recently hosted a Summer Reading Celebration at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle.
The event drew more than 200 children and their families for three hours of festivities to celebrate reading and books.
Jennifer Frances arrived with Bess the Book Bus, and each child attending was able to select a book to take home.
Other special guests were Dr. Erik Johnson of the St. Apollonia Dental Clinic in Presque Isle, who showed the children proper brushing techniques, and Giving Tree Music of Tampa, Fla., who created a drum circle to help encourage children to express themselves through music.
“Our celebration was a huge success and allowed us to celebrate summer reading and to get the kids excited for the upcoming school year,” said United Way Executive Director Sherry Locke. “Having support from so many volunteers and organizations really was the key.”
In addition, Cole Hill, Dakota Willette and Aubree Ciccolella were announced as winners of the Summer Slide reading program. All three completed the reading assignments and were randomly drawn to receive some fun summer prizes.
