Caribou 5-0 after topping Old Town

The Viking girls’ soccer team kept their winning streak intact Saturday with another victory. The squad was able to knock off Old Town, 3-1, in a road contest.

Caribou took its perfect 5-0 record and first-place standing in the Class B North ranks into Tuesday night’s contest at Presque Isle.

Megan Thornton opened the scoring against the Coyotes by running into a direct kick taken by Searra Herbert. After Old Town tied the game, the Vikings’ Ashley Matlock netted an unassisted goal with 1:11 to play in the first half.

Herbert put in an insurance goal with 2:53 left in the match, assisted by Maddie Doucette. Kerrigan Manter saved five of 11 shots in goal for the winners, who have now outscored their opponents by a 35-5 margin.

“The game got a little physical, but our girls kept their composure,” said Viking coach Todd Albert. “We still have to do a better job winning balls out of the air, but the girls worked hard and came out with the win.”

The Caribou boys were beaten that same afternoon by a 2-0 score and their record fell to 1-4. They travel to Presque Isle (0-2) for a 7 p.m. match tonight.

The Fort Fairfield girls were able to defeat LCS/MSSM in Limestone last Tuesday, 3-1. FF improved to 2-4-1, while the Eagles are now 1-4 after also losing at Hodgdon Friday, 8-1. Sam Zwecker scored the LCS/MSSM goal. Karoline Dillenbeck and Bridget Tompson were the Eagle goalies and combined for 12 saves.

The Eagle boys followed up their loss to Fort Fairfield last Tuesday (see story) with a close defeat at Hodgdon Friday, 2-1.

Daden Palmer scored the game-winner with 1:36 to go in regulation. Travis Hatfield had tied the game for the Eagles with a goal midway through the second half. Mathew Pelkey finished with 16 saves on 22 shots for LCS/MSSM, now 2-3 on the season.

The Eagle squads next play at Central Aroostook Thursday, the boys’ game at 5 p.m. and the girls’ match at 7 p.m.
