Houlton golfers stay busy on the links

HOULTON, Maine — The Shire golf team was busy last week with four matches in a four-day period, including an invitational event in Caribou Saturday.

“We are starting to hit our stride,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. “Our goal is to get to 160 before the PVC Regional on Sept. 29. We know we haven’t played are best golf of the season yet.”

The coach added the team is right where he hoped they would be at this point in the season.

“Each individual knows where they have to improve,” Grant said. “We had a good round Wednesday at Barnes Brook with a 169. Overall I am pleased with where we are at this time. We are very young but have a lot of talent and heart.”

At the Caribou Country Club Saturday for the third annual Invitational Tournament, Houlton was the top squad on the day, shooting a 367 to beat Presque Isle (381) and Caribou (399). Drew Marino was the medalist for the event with a low score of 78.

Individual scores were: Houlton, Marino, 78; Wyatt Harvey, 94; Nick Brewer, 101; Duncan McCormack, 96; Isaac Vega, 110; and Devin Ivey, 117. Caribou, Bailey Griffeth, 99; Connor Plourde, 100; Noah Rosado, 97; Gabe Rand, 103; and Stewart Curtis, 112. Presque Isle, Hunter Flynn, 81; John Saucier, 94; Seth Roy, 101; Libby Boone, 105; and Isaac Madore, 112.

The Shires (6-3) also played Caribou on Friday at the Houlton Community Golf Course, with Houlton coming out on top 180 to 204. The medalist on the day was Harvey, with a 41. Individual scores for Houlton from that meet were: Marino, 47; Harvey, 41; Brewer, 45; McCormack, 51; Vega, 47; and Ivey, 55.

For Caribou, Plourde shot a 52; Griffeth, 47; Rosado, 51; Rand, 54; and Curtis, 58.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Barnes Brook golf course in Enfield, the Shires defeated Penobscot Valley and Focroft Academy. Team scores were Houlton, 169; Foxcroft, 204; and PVHS, 223. Marino was the medalist for the day with a 38.

Individual Houlton results were: Marino, 38; Harvey, 43; Brewer, 44; McCormack, 44; Vega, 45; Ivey, 63; and Carson Grant, 61.

For PVHS, Makenzie Plourde shot a 49; Karagan McGlauflin, 48; Wyatt Carr, 56; Matthew Durant, 70. For Foxcroft, Akiro Ianbbe shot a 39; Sammy Libby, 47; Caleb Beusson, 61; and Ethan Curtis, 57.

Against John Bapst and Old Town Sept. 6 at the Pine Hill golf course in Orrington, it was the Coyotes who came out on top. Team scores were: Old Town, 142; Houlton 184; and John Bapst, 186.

Individual results for Houlton were: Marino, 38; Harvey, 46; Brewer, 48; McCormack, 52; Vega, 56; and Ivey, 59.

For John Bapst, Brennan Hubbard shot a 37; Cannon Breen, 51; Terry Huang, 46; David Fernandez, 52; Nate Mushlh, 59; and Crystal Bell, 67. For Old Town, Cole Daniels was medalist on the day with a 34. Other scores were: Chris Kauppila, 37; Wes Kauppila, 36; Dillon Leland, 41; Alex Blackie, 35; and Austin Soucy, 47.
