100 Years Ago – Sept. 20, 1916
Reunion — The reunion of the 6th Maine battery was held Sept. 6 at Custer Post rooms in Lewiston, with eight veterans in attendance to enjoy reminiscences of war times and earlier reunions. Edward O. Welch, son of Comrade John W. Welch, entertained the boys at dinner. In attendance were the following: O.D. Lothrop, East Wilton; Joseph Wildes, Biddeford; F.C. Herrick, Old Orchard; and John Welch of Dead River. Letters were enjoyed from other comrades.
Coach — Joe Deasey returned to Colby on Monday and will coach the Lawrence High football team at Fairfield.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1941
All girl band — “The Swing-O-Pating Sirens” is the name given to the all-girl band of seven who will furnish the music as well as some of the novelty entertainment when Harry Berry’s Sunkist Vanities appear at the Temple Theatre in Houlton Oct. 1 and 2. The show boasts a cast of 25 performers including several outstanding stars. The feature picture on the program will be “Men at Large,” with Marjorie Weaver and Richard Derr.
Return to school — Erma Grant, Eulah Steen and Shirley Kinney have resumed their studies as seniors at Aroostook State Normal School In Presque Isle, which began its 39th year of teacher training the past week. Miss Dorothy Wood has taken up her junior year studies there.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 21 , 1966
Award winner — John W. Carson, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Carson of Houlton, won the Sylvania-Minutemen award for 1966. He won it by being selected the most outstanding ROTC cadet in Massachusetts. The award is given for distinction in academic achievement and in military proficiency. Carson is from Boston’s Northeastern University.
Scholarship winner — Miss Kathy Saunders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Saunders of Grove Street, was presented with a $500 Eastern States Exposition Scholarship by Governor John H. Reed. Miss Saunders is a 1966 graduate of Houlton High School, and is beginning her freshman year at the University of Maine.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1991
Celebration — Cecil and Minnie Lorom of Littleton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 27 with an open house for family and friends at their son Rodney’s home on the B Road. The Loroms were married July 24, 1941, in Littleton, by the Rev. Ruben Doody. They are the parents of nine children and they have 28 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Teaching position — Kristy Blake, a native of Houlton and member of the Houlton High School 1975 graduating class, has returned to her roots to work with residents of all ages in Aroostook County. The daughter of Kenneth and Joyce Blake of Houlton, Blake has begun a rehabilitation teaching job with the Maine Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
