HOULTON, Maine — After coming close a season ago, the Hodgdon golf team has finally claimed the Aroostook County golf championship for small schools.
Hodgdon beat out squads from Fort Fairfield, Central Aroostook and Southern Aroostook Friday afternoon at the Houlton Community Golf Club.
“We finished second last year, and this is our first time winning the County championship,” Hodgdon coach Mike Fleming said. “We know we are not going to go down [to States] and win, because the scores from downstate are so much better. But we will go down and get some good experience.”
Team scores on the day were 1, Hodgdon, 413; 2, Central Aroostook, 420; 3, Fort Fairfield, 429; and 4, Southern Aroostook, 468. Both Hodgdon and Central Aroostook qualified for the state team championships on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Natanis Golf in Vassalboro.
Low medalist on the day was Hodgdon’s Ben Tuttle with an 82. He narrowly beat out Jon Bernard of Fort Fairfield who shot an 89 over 18 holes. Central Aroostook’s Shane Stackpole was third at 96.
Tuttle qualified for the state individual meet on Saturday Oct. 15, also at Natanis. Joining Tuttle at the state individual championships are Fort Fairfield’s Bernard, Sadie Edgecomb and Sara Edgecomb.
Individual Hodgdon results were: Ben Tuttle, 82; Andrew Tuttle, 97; Justin Wilson, 101; and Bryon Barton, 133.
Central Aroostook’s results were: Shane Stackpole, 96; Tyson Cyr, 101; Ted Wheeler, 112; Isabelle Wright, 111; and Taia Tilley, 135.
Fort Fairfield’s results were: Jon Bernard, 89; Sadie Edgecomb, 101; Sara Edgecomb, 100; and Graydon Griffeth, 139.
Results for Southern Aroostook were: Hunter Walker, 105; Riley Robinson, 110; Austin Bishop, 125; and Arianna Rigby, 128.
“Overall, our golfers have solidified their game,” coach Fleming said. “Ben has played the most consistently for the past four years. Andrew, Justin and Bryon have all shown improvement this season.”
