Shires battle Orono to stalemate

Nearing the midway point to the season, local girls soccer teams are starting to establish themselves on the field and in the standings.

On Saturday, the Houlton girls soccer team faced its toughest challenge to date against visiting Orono, with the two teams battling to a 1-1 stalemate after two overtime periods. Houlton (4-0-1) is currently the No. 2 seed in Class C North, while Orono (3-1-1) is the No. 3 seed. Fort Kent (4-1-1) is the top-ranked team. Houlton hosts Fort Kent on Thursday in what could be a playoff preview.

In Class D North, Katahdin (2-2-2) is the highest-ranked local squad, coming in as the No. 7 seed, while Southern Aroostook (1-2-2) is ninth, Hodgdon (4-1) is 11th and East Grand (1-5) is 15th. The top 12 teams qualify for the postseason.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Hodgdon 2, Southern Aroostook 1 — At Dyer Brook Monday, the Hawks escaped with a narrow one-goal victory. Individual results were not reported.

Shead 7, East Grand 2 — At Danforth Saturday, Shead freshman Keisha Scott scored five goals, including four in
the second half, to propel the Tigers past East Grand. Scott also had an assist on the day. Holly Preston chipped in two goals and an assist for the winners.

Viking sophomore Sydney Cowger scored both goals for East Grand.

Orono 1, Houlton 1 — At Houlton Saturday, Brinsley Chasse opened the scoring for Orono as she launched a 20-yard shot with 13:34 left to play in the first half past Houlton keeper Tessa Solomon.

In the second half, Shire Mia Hanning slid a ball past Orono keeper Katelyn Richards with 22:03 left to even the score. Neither team could convert the game winner through two overtime periods.

Solomon made five saves on eight shots for the Shires, while Richards made five saves on 10 shots for the Red Riots.

Katahdin 1, Schenck 1 — At East Millinocket Friday, the Wolverines and Cougars of Stacyville battled to a tie through two overtime periods. Olivia Gallant had a goal for Schenck, while Erin Lake scored the goal for Katahdin.

Allison Noddin had 14 saves on 16 shots for Schenck and Haley Landry had eight saves on nine shots for Katahdin.

East Grand 3, Hodgdon 7 — At Hodgdon Sept. 14, Taylor Desrosiers led the Hawks to victory over East Grand with four goals and one assist. Jill Gough contributed two goals and one assist for Hodgdon. Sidney Crane chipped in a goal and one assist while Maddie Merritt and Katherine Rediker both assisted.

Haleigh Shay led the Vikings with three unassisted goals.

For Hodgdon, Jessica Drew made nine saves on 15 shots. Kianna Caissie had 23 saves on 35 shots for East Grand.

Washburn 1, Southern Aroostook 5 — At Dyer Brook Sept. 14, Kylie Vining netted three goals to propel the Warriors past Washburn. Emma Nadeau and Katie Stevens also scored for Southern Aroostook off assists from Katelyn Slauenwhite and Vining. Makelyn Porter and Kacy Daggett chipped in with an assist apiece.

Washburn’s goal was scored by Kristen Sarmiento, unassisted.

Sydney Brewer made 10 saves on 12 shots for the 1-2-2 Warriors while Maggie Castonguay had 12 saves on 21 shots for 3-7-1 Washburn.
