100 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1916

 Birthday — Several ladies met at the home of Arthur Gove in honor of Miss Nellie Ward’s 78th birthday and had a sewing ‘bee.’

 New purchase — Mr. Alex J. Lowery, who for a number of years was salesman at the Houlton Grange Store, has purchased the Sincock Grocery Co., and will continue to do business at the old stand.

 

75 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1941

 Farewell party — Donald Brewer, who left Sunday to join the U.S. Marines in South Carolina, was given a party at the Maurice Peabody Camp in the Haynesville woods Thursday evening by the personnel of Anderson Bros. store, where he has been employed for several years.

 Stage show — Harry Berry’s ‘Sunkist Vanities’ will be on stage at Temple Theatre. The show has an all-girl band, and such headliners as Dr. Lewis and his Stooges, Mary Keith and her violin, Willis Dee, card and cigarette manipulator, Bill King the juggling jitterbug and many others. The show, with its cast of 25 performers, should be a treat to Houlton audiences who have not seen a stage show in many months.

 

50 Years Ago – Sept. 28 , 1966

 New owners — Announcement was made Monday that Hannaford Bros. Co. of Portland, a wholesale food distributor, had acquired the 31 Sampson supermarkets in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, including the Sampson store located at the Houlton Shopping Plaza.

 Winner — Gail F. Griffin, a University of Maine freshman, has been awarded $200 as regional winner in a national farm and home electrification contest conducted by the Future Farmers of America Foundation.

 

25 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1991

 New position — Nancy Mooers, OTR/L, occupational therapist, has joined the staff at Houlton Regional Hospital. She completed undergraduate work in psychology at Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and a master’s program in occupational therapy at Boston University. She is a Wyoming native and resides in Houlton with husband, David.

 Celebration — Janet and William Lynds celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17 at their residence. The lawn party hosted by their daughters, Carolyn Cheney, Maryadelle Grant and Corrine Bongiovanni, featured music by Tim and Travis Humphrey.
