Leo Gove Sleeper was a son, nephew, brother, uncle, dad, grandfather and friend. He was called home on Sept. 8, 2016 at the age of 85.
Leo, called Gove by most people, was born at home to Royce and Thelma on April 5, 1931. He graduated from Sherman High June 1948 and worked on the family farm until July 1951 when he joined the United States Army. He served full time until 1954, stationed in Germany for a while, before he transferred to the Army Reserve until 1959. He and his brother, Fred, opened an appliance company called Sleeper’s Bros. in Sherman. He worked at the Great Northern Paper Co. in Millinocket and also had odd jobs until retirement.
He enjoyed working with wood – either making items or cutting down trees – on the family farm. He was family oriented, often helping with the care of his mother, father and aunt. He enjoyed the great outdoors and traveling. He was close to his aunt for 62 years. He enjoyed hanging out with his brothers either at their homes or down at Mattawamkeag Lake. He stayed in Maine until 2010 when he moved to Pullman, WA, and then to Spokane, Washington, in 2015. He was a resident of Spokane at the time of his passing.
Leo is survived by his daughters, Kathy Skiba and friend, Dan Dimock of Pullman, WA; Mary (Stacy) Farist of Cartersville, GA, Gloria (David) Kirch of Toccoa, GA, Crystal Eroglu of Lewiston, ME; Holly Sheffield (Andy) of Benedicta, ME; sons, Christopher (Tracy) Sleeper of Gardner, MA, Leo George (Barbara) Sleeper of Lewiston, ME, Leland (Linda) Stetson of Wasilla, AK; daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Taunton, MA; his brother, David (Janet) Sleeper of Mattawamkeag, ME; sister, Lois (Malcolm) Foss of Lincoln, ME; sisters-in-law, Francis Sleeper of Sherman, ME, and Barbara Sleeper of Island Falls, ME; brother-in-law Derrell Hysom of Millinocket, ME; and numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a close cousin, Fredrick (Dee) Parker of Geneso, NY; and special friends — the Mitchell family of Sherman, ME, Daniel Curtis of Benedicta, ME; and a little buddy, Xavier of Pullman, WA.
He was preceded in death by his son, Royce of Taunton, MA; his parents; brothers, Alan and Fred of Sherman, ME; and his aunt Lora of Sherman Station, ME; special acknowledgement to his grandson, Shaun, who helped care for him for years.
Internment will take place at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, ME, on Oct. 12, 2016, at noon, follow by a memorial spaghetti dinner at the Molunkus Valley Sno-Drifters Club on North Street. in Sherman at 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of choice.
