We are moving full steam ahead with the completion of the sanctuary. The walls are just about painted, the fencing is going up and the cabinets and countertops have been delivered. We have been straight out fundraising to make this happen. We have also been blessed with community support and donations.
Our volunteers have worked nonstop. Their commitment is unbelievable and we love them for that. Yes, we are behind schedule, but we are so close to an opening so please stay tuned – we will be announcing a grand opening date in the near future.
Please keep in mind that on top of building this new sanctuary, we have never strayed from our mission of taking care of the animals. We have managed to run a sanctuary out of foster homes and a few cages here at the salon. Yes, we have been limited on the amount of animals that we can help, but we have remained operational through this whole rebuilding process.
I would like to share a few happy endings with you. Juliette, the little kitten that came in with severe life-threatening injuries, is now happy and healthy after two surgeries and some much-needed TLC. Juliette has been adopted by her foster mom and is now living the life that she so deserves.
Cola, the little paralyzed kitten that arrived in extreme pain, is now happy and healthy despite the fact she is paralyzed – and yes, she has been adopted by her foster mom. Cola is the new sister to Pepsi, who looks just like her and is also paralyzed. They make a sweet pair.
We had a sweet little cat come in on Monday and early Tuesday morning she delivered five tiny little kittens. Mom and babies are all doing well.
PJ, the little Chihuahua that came in having severe seizures, sometimes three a day, has been to the vet for bloodwork and is now on medication. His foster mom is making his food at home to try and help the situation.
I would like to leave you with one last story. Oliver, a little blind Chihuahua with no teeth approximately 14 years old, came into the care of The Ark just about a year ago and was placed in a permanent foster home. His foster mom is one of the kindest people I know. Her love for animals speaks volumes. She took Oliver in and gave him a loving home when no one else would.
Yesterday Oliver was at the vet. He was having labored breathing and we could see fluid building up. Oliver is in congestive heart failure. The fluid was drained and Oliver was sent home on heart medication. His days are limited; he could have a few months or a few days. He is comfortable and eating well, and the medication will help with his breathing and the fluid buildup.
Oliver came back home to spend his final days with his foster mom, whom he adores. His days will be filled with love and happiness, and when it is his time Oliver will leave this world knowing what it was like to be loved and cared for and he will be at peace. Hats off to Oliver’s mom. Notice I said “mom,” not “foster mom.” Yes Oliver has been adopted by his foster mom. That is the greatest gift of all.
Thank you for your continued support, and as always, thank you for reading our column.
