Vikings run well in Old Town meet

Violette and Michaud among team standouts

     OLD TOWN, Maine — The Caribou cross country teams were involved in a very competitive meet Saturday. The 67th Old Town Sectional Invitational was held and the Viking teams each placed second.

     In the boys’ meet, the Vikings scored 74 points, far behind victorious Orono’s 25 but ahead of eight other squads. Evan Desmond, a junior, completed the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes and 38.75 seconds, which was just 5.71 behind meet winner Matt Keresey of Orono (17:33.04).

     Dylan Marrero placed sixth overall in the 80-runner field. The Viking sophomore came in at 18:00.34. Bryce Coffin was the next Caribou runner to finish, doing so in 18:52.59, good for 19th place. Teammate Alec Cyr was 21st in 18:53.3.

     The Caribou girls gave Orono all it wanted. The Vikings’ 76 points were just eight behind the top-scoring Red Riots. Caribou was four points ahead of third-place Mount Desert Island, which featured meet winner Tia Tardy, whose time was 19:03.4.

     The Vikes were led by sophomore Ashley Violette, whose time of 21:52.2 put her in 12th overall out of 73 runners. Senior Simone Michaud took 15th at 22:09.4 as the second Caribou runner to cross the line. Katrina Salch (22:28.3), Madeline Gudde (22:30.5) and Sarae Greenier (22:30.8) finished in a tight pack and grabbed the 18th, 19th and 20th slots.

     The Vikings will next take part in Saturday’s Festival of Champions in Belfast.
