CA Panthers set to compete
in team event Saturday
The Presque Isle Wildcats fell short in their quest to compete in this weekend’s Class B state team championships, but did have a pair of golfers qualify for the individual championships slated for Oct. 15.
Hunter Flynn and Libby Boone hit qualifying standards during the Penobscot Valley Conference Championships, held at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln Thursday.
Flynn shot an 80, tied for the fifth lowest score at the event. The PIHS senior was one of 18 male golfers to make it to the state individual tourney, to be held at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro. A score of 90 or lower was needed to advance.
Boone’s score of of 109 was the fourth lowest among schoolgirl golfers. It was one stroke under the minimum of 110 required to make it to the state event.
As a team, Presque Isle recorded a score of 394 and placed fourth among eight teams. The top three teams, Old Town (326), Mount Desert Island (368) and Hermon (375), all made it into the field for Saturday’s state team competition.
Presque Isle, under first-year coach Adam Flynn, finished ahead of Caribou, John Bapst, Foxcroft Academy and Ellsworth.
In a tune-up for the PVCs, held the previous afternoon at JaTo, Presque Isle played a dual match against Caribou and won by 22 strokes, 200-222.
Flynn was the medalist with a 39, while Boone shot a 50, Seth Roy a 53 and Isaac Madore a 58. The Wildcats finished with a regular season record of 10-7.

In order to qualify, the squad placed second at the Aroostook League Championships, held at Houlton Community Golf Club Sept. 16. Adam Metzler is the team’s coach and Shane Stackpole has been the Panthers’ top golfer.
Three Fort Fairfield golfers — Jon Bernard, Sara Edgecomb and Sadie Edgecomb — all made it into the Class C state individual tourney Oct. 15 after qualifying on Sept. 16.
