Girls soccer squads eyeing postseason

The flip-flop atop the Class C North standings continues for the Houlton girls soccer team. After the Shires captured the coveted top spot a week ago, Orono regained the No. 1 seed this week by virtue of playing more games than the Shires.

Houlton (7-0-1, 56.6429 Heal Points) fell to second as of Tuesday morning, while Orono (7-1-2, 76.27.55) was back in the atop the standings. The top 10 teams make the playoffs in Class C North, with the top five seeds earning a first-round bye.

In Class D North, Katahdin (5-4-2, 47.7806) has steadily moved up the ranks and is now the fifth seed as of Tuesday morning, with just three games remaining on the Cougars’ schedule. Hodgdon (7-3, 34.8367) is seventh, while Southern Aroostook (3-4-2, 29.5408) is eighth and East Grand (3-8, 11.2755) is 15th. The top 12 teams make the postseason, with the top four teams earning a first-round bye.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday that were reported to the newspaper.

East Grand 1, Katahdin 7 — At Stacyville Monday, Bailee Moody-Kay booted in three goals for the hat trick to power the Cougars past East Grand. Georgia Landry chipped in two goals for the Cougars, while Erin Robinson and Erin Lake each added one.

Malory Gilman scored the lone Viking goal off a penalty shot.

Ashland 11, Hodgdon 0 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Shelby Stolze knocked in five goals as Ashland rolled past Hodgdon. Mackenzie Carter had two goals plus an assist for the Hornets. Willow
Hall added two goals and Morgan Doughty and Cassidy Pelletier one.

Megan Cote had three saves on 10 shots for Ashland. Jessica Drew and Autumn Ganzel combined for 17 saves on 32 shots for Hodgdon.

Southern Aroostook 1, Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville Friday, Kylie Vining scored unassisted for the Warriors with 22:51 remaining in the second half. Katahdin outshot the Warriors 25-11, but weren’t able to finish.

Sydney Brewer had 25 saves for Southern Aroostook, while Natalie Richard’s had six saves for Katahdin.

Lee Academy/Stearns 1, Houlton 4 — At Houlton Thursday, Kolleen Bouchard scored two first half goals and added an assist to lead the Shires to victory over Lee/Stearns. Tyra Gentle opened the scoring with 38:44 left in the first half and Amelia Ivey scored the only goal of the second half. Sierra Hoops added an assist.

Katherine Alley scored the lone goal for Lee/Stearns with 3:24 left in the first half. Houlton keeper Tessa Solomon made two saves on five Lee/Stearns shots while Isabella Gallant made four saves on 13 shots for Lee/Stearns.

Woodland 1, East Grand 5 — At Danforth Thursday, Kianna Caissie had two first-half goals to lead East Grand past Woodland. Sydney Cowger, Jennifer Crone and Mallory Gilman added goals for 3-7 East Grand. Jordyn Cowger saved 11 of 12 shots.

Faith Johnson had the lone goal for Woodland.

Katahdin 3, Hodgdon 1 — At Hodgdon Sept. 27, Cougar Erin Lake knocked in three goals to lead Katahdin past Hodgdon. Natalie Richards had five saves on 13 shots for Katahdin.

Sidney Crane had the only goal for Hodgdon. Jessica Drew saved 23 of 35 shots.

Southern Aroostook 0, Ashland 8 — At Ashland, Sept. 27, Mackenzie Carter had a hat trick to lead the Hornets past Southern Aroostook for their 10th win of the season. Morgan Doughty contributed a goal and four assists Also scoring for Ashland were Jamie Poulin, Kassandra Nelson, Shelby Stolze and Willow Hall with one goal apiece.

Hornets keeper Megan Cote stopped both shots she faced while Warrior goalie Sydney Brewer made 23 saves off 46 shots. Southern Aroostook falls to 2-4-2.
