Pastors share in harvest

Local pastors have joined together to provide a free service for the harvest workers in Washburn.
Organizer Greg Sponberg, pastor of the Baptist Church in Washburn, has been visiting local farms daily to provide coffee and snacks. All items are donated or purchased in town to support local businesses.
Some farms that received this community support include Mark Tarr Farms, Fox’s potato house, Porter Farms, Aaron’s potato house, Fred Flewelling’s potato house, Will-Turn Farms, Mark Tarr and crew, Matt White and crew and McCrum Farms.
After school cooking
Family Cooking Class for the Washburn 21st Century After School Program participants and their families starts on Thursday, Oct. 13.
Thanks to the grant the After School Program received last year from The Aroostook Medical Center, and thanks to their cooperation with the SnapEd program from the Aroostook County Action Program, they will be able to host this program at Washburn District Elementary School. Classes will be held each Thursday at 4:30 pm in the WDES cafeteria.
All the materials and recipes as well as the instructor’s time will be supplied.
Katharine Putnam from the SnapEd program will teach new recipes and nutrition facts. In addition, each family participating in this class will receive a slow cooker at the last class. For more information, please contact Halina Herzog at hherzog@msad45.net.
Benefit Spaghetti Dinner
The Washburn Area PTO will sponsor a benefit spaghetti dinner for Reed Plummer, an eighth-grade Washburn student battling brain cancer for a second time in his young life. The dinner will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 5-7 p.m. at the Washburn Trailrunners’ Clubhouse.
The meal includes spaghetti, roll, green salad, dessert and soda. Coffee and water will also be provided. Take-outs are welcome. The cost is a minimum donation of $7 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under, and $20 for a family of four or more. Refills for a donation of your choice. There will be a 50/50 raffle that evening also.
If you have any questions or want to donate,call Washburn PTO chair Angela Farley at 455-8048, contact any PTO member, or attend the next meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Rec Center starting at 6:30.
Donations are still being taken through the GoFundMe campaign at www.gofundme.com/2o34204. Tickets for two separate raffle baskets valued at over $200 can still be purchased at Country Farms Market or Washburn Trailside. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. All money raised goes directly to Reed and family.
Washburn Memorial Library
On Monday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m., there will be a Blacklite Puppet Show with Beth Brown. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
On Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., there will be toddler storytime with Jennifer Tanguay. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Washburn Memorial Library hours are Monday, 1-7 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The Girl Scouts meet each Friday afternoon (when school is in session) at 3 p.m. downstairs in the King Room. For more information, contact Lois Walton at 455-4814.
Salmon Brook Society
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will hold a potluck supper and business meeting on Oct. 20 at the Civic Center in Washburn at 6 p.m. Those attending should bring a place setting and either a main course dish, a salad or a desert. All are welcome.
United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Women’s Group will hold a bazaar Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m.-12 noon at the church.
Scheduled Meetings
The Washburn Town Council meets in regular sessions on the second Monday of each month at the Washburn Civic Center. If the second Monday falls on a holiday, the meeting is moved to the following Monday.
The next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
