With only a few games left to go before the postseason, a mad scramble to move up in the standings is taking place for high school girls’ soccer teams. The final countable day for the regular season is Tuesday, Oct. 18, with preliminary playoffs following Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22.

Despite suffering the team’s first loss of the season Monday – a 3-1 defeat to Madawaska – the Shires are still ranked as one of the top teams in the Class C North region. According to the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings as of Tuesday morning, Houlton (10-1-1, 99.1837 Heal Points) is second in Class C North. Orono (8-1-2, 108.4184) is the top-ranked team in the region. The top five teams earn a first round bye. Houlton will likely host a quarterfinal on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

In Class D North, Katahdin (5-4-3, 63.6990) is fourth; Hodgdon (8-3-1, 61.9541) is fifth; Southern Aroostook (5-4-3, 46.0714) is eighth; and East Grand (3-9, 18.2143) is 13th. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs, so East Grand will need to secure at least a couple of more wins to get back into contention.
