Boys halt winless streak; first in 11 matches
The Caribou girls kept up their winning ways and the Viking boys won for the first time in 11 matches in varsity soccer action last week.
The Viking girls are currently in fourth place in Class B North with games remaining tonight at home against Presque Isle and next Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Madawaska. Caribou holds a 9-2-1 record after blanking Fort Kent at home last Wednesday, 2-0; downing Mount Desert Island Saturday in Bar Harbor, 1-0; and winning a shootout against Old Town at home Monday, 5-3.
Junior Searra Herbert provided the game-winning goal against MDI and then had three goals in her team’s home win over the Coyotes. She also had an assist in the win over the Warriors earlier in the week.
Ashley Matlock and Maddie Doucette were the goal scorers against Fort Kent, while Doucette provided the assist on the only goal of the game against MDI. Doucette scored two goals andGabrielle Marquis, Zoe Gerakaris and Kendra Furber had assists in the victory over Old Town.
Kerrigan Manter and Jaelynn Doody shared the goalkeeping chores in two of the three matches.
The Caribou boys snapped a winless streak that goes back to the team’s season opener against Madawaska played Aug. 26. The Vikings blanked Old Town Monday at home, 2-0, with Andre Rossignol opening the scoring by heading in an Austin Findlen corner kick in the first half and Findlen scoring himself off an Alex Ezzy assist with just under nine minutes to go in regulation.
In their other games last week, Caribou fell at home to Fort Kent last Wednesday, 2-1, and then were blanked at MDI Saturday, 5-0. The team’s record is 2-9-1 with just two games left — Thursday at home against Presque Isle and next Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Madawaska.
In Class D, the Fort Fairfield boys secured their No. 1 ranking on the boys’ side after easing to the win over LCS/MSSM Monday afternoon. Landon Kinney led the offensive charge with three goals, while Ryan Player added two and Grayden Griffeth, Isaac Cyr and Jonah Daigle one apiece. Tobyn Blatt scored the lone Eagles’ goal.
LCS/MSSM had beaten Ashland Saturday, 2-0, with Alex Sprague and Tommy Pinette each scoring to cool off the streaking Hornets, the No. 3 team in the ‘D’ division. The Eagles are now 5-6 and in eighth place in Class C North with three matches remaining.
The LCS/MSSSM defeated Fort Fairfield Monday, 5-1, to avenge an early-season loss to the Tigers. The Eagles got three goals from Bri Becker and one each from Delaney Rossignol and Megan Tucker while collecting their third win against eight losses. Bridget Tompson collected 18 saves on 19 shots and Sierra Dann recorded an assist for LCS/MSSM.
The Eagle girls also lost at home to undefeated Ashland Saturday, 8-0.
